Investing in Our Future

I am excited at the prospect of teaching your children next year. Moving up to third grade brings many changes. We will be having homework every night, doing monthly book projects, and working on becoming Fully Responsible, Organized, and Growing Students! With this transition in mind, here are some ideas that might make the change from second to third grade a little easier when August comes.

Religion: Go to Mass on Sunday, if not more often, and encourage participation. Try to make some time for prayer everyday and get to Confession at least once over the summer.

Reading: READ! Read to them, they read to you, read silently. Teach them your tricks and techniques for reading and understanding words you don’t know. Discuss the characters, setting, and plot (beginning, middle, and end).

Math: Please make sure your child knows their addition and subtraction facts. They should be able to answer each problem within 3 seconds. Also, work on mastering the multiplication facts. Math will be much easier in third grade if they have a good grasp of these facts.

English: Practice capitalizing words that need to be capitalized and using punctuation at the end of sentences.

Social: Have your child practice waiting and solving problems by themselves. It will make them feel self-confident.

Here are some websites your child can go to over the summer:

www.mathfactcafe.com

www.freerice.com – Practice multiplication facts and English grammar.

pbskids.org/cyberchase/basic.html

oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/mathmagician/cathymath.html

Let us pray for one another over the summer. God bless you!
