Mrs. Gerding's Newsletter

A quick overview of the 2010-2011 school year!

Reading & Writing

We will begin by learning the letters of the alphabet and what sounds they make when we put them together. We will have learning centers in which we can listen to stories on tape, share books with each other, plan our play by writing in our journals, and making our own books. This is just a small sample of the many activities we will be doing throughout the year.

  Math

We will learn not only to identify our numbers, but understand what they mean and how to combine them so we can add and subtract and how to write them. We will learn our address and phone number. Twice a month our fifth grade buddies will play math games with us.

  Religion

Every week we will attend Mass with the rest of the St. Louis community and eventually plan and take part in a Mass. We will learn our prayers and even write some of our own. We will hear stories from the Bible and learn about God's love for us.

Volunteer Opportunities

I would love to have parents help in the classroom. I will need help at least three times a week working directly with students. If you can't help in the classroom but would still love to give your time, there will be opportunities to work from home as well.

  Self-Regulation & Play

Through play four major skills in early development are promoted. They include: cognitive skills, which is the ability to think deliberately, the development of symbolic representation, oral language, and content related literacy concepts and skills. We will play various games throughout the year that will help them develop skills while having fun!
